The word Renaissance means "rebirth" and defines different artistic and intellectual creativity in the 14th-16th centuries.

Italian Renaissance: The Italian city-states innovated Renaissance art and architecture by their realistic depictions, human form and the emotions that they expressed, and used the technique of linear perspective to look three dimensional or two dimensional. Sculptors tried to depict their subjects in natural poses that reflected the workings of the human muscles rather than posed postures. Domed buildings were constructed and other buildings that were simple, yet elegant. While the main theme of art was no longer just religious subjects, the church, royalty and politicians were the main patrons of the Renaissance artists. Humanism takes hold and the original Greek and Roman writings are studied and discussed.

Northern Renaissance: The Northern Renaissance focused on a more personal style and one-on-one relationship with God. Erasums, a leading Norther Humanists, thought that the Church had become too involved in worldly matters and too wealthy leading it to neglect its followers. The growing middle class promoted the Northern Renaissance and art reflected more landscapes and still lifes and small scale paintings were produced for the home.
