The Experiences of Women in the Renaissance

Like much of history, women in the Renaissance did not hold a lot of power. However, they did have a few more rights and opportunities than in many other societies. Women had no political rights. They could not vote or hold a public office. They were expected to marry and follow their husband's wishes. A woman could inherit property, but if she was married, her husband controlled the property and any of it's profits. Most urban crafts banned women from their guilds, but some allowed them to work under the 'master craftsmen' (although with no high status). Education for women was limited, but as time progressed they were able to receive basic literacy (however they could not continue on to the universities). Some of the daughters of the upper class could receive private tutoring but it rarely occurred.
