The Medici family of Florence is traced back to the end of the 12th century. They were known as friends of the common peoople and had great wealth by the 13th century and they also had political influence. Cosimo de Medici spent a large part of his wealth on charity and cultivated the arts and he created the largest library in Europe and founded the Platonic Academy where Plato was studdied. He supported artists like Donatello, Ucello, Ghiberti, and Brunelleschi. At this time Florence became the center of Humanism and a cultural center of Europe. Courtnay Buaas
