Quetzalcoatl was a major Aztec god, who was borrowed from the Toltecs. His name means "Feathered serpent" and he was the lord of Light and the morning star. He created humanity by mixing the crushed bones of the dead with his own blood. According to Aztec myth, he was also exiled from Tenochtitlan by Huitzilopochtli and vowed to return. The Aztecs thought the arrival of Cortez was actually the return of Quetzalcoatl and worshiped him as a god initially.
