From around the time of 300-900 CE, the Mayans began building a series of large cities and ceremonial cities. The biggest of these was Tikal. At its hight, Tikal was the biggest of the Maya cities and consited of roughly forty thousand people. It is also a notable city for its Temple of the Jaguar that rose to the city's skyline and represented Tikal's control over the surrounding region.
