History 8 China Vocabulary

Yang

Yin and Yang is an ancient Chinese concept that explains how things work and is the cause of why things happen. While Yin is the dark section of the symbol, representing the earth, Yang is the white part of the symbol, representing the heavens. The two are opposites. Yang embodies masculinity, light, heat, dryness, positive, active, upward, strong, peace, and serenity, to name a few. The two are constantly changing and if they become unbalanced, one can be weakened. The circle symbol shows the balance between the two energies. The concept of Ying Yang was written down by Tsou Yen in the Warring States Period (476-221 BC) but was recognized before then. Yin and Yang also plays a role in Medicine and Pathology. All in all, according to the concept of Ying Yang originating from the ancient Chinese, the occurrence of events can be balanced and explained.
