San Pedro Sula, is an urban-type city, located in the North East corner of the Nation, Honduras.

Coordinates and Geographical Information

Latitude: 15.5 Longitude: 88.0 Located near the Caymen Islands, a popular tourist location right off the Gulf of Mexico, and the lower part of the North Pacific Ocean, San Pedro Sula culture has much to do with the Ocean.


History

Founded in June 27, 1536 by Pedro de Alvarado, San Pedro Sula has a rich history. Originally the San Pedro Sula area was a marsh and swampland. Gold found nearby was stamped into coins to create the nations currency. After the original location of San Pedro Sula was attacked by French, English, and Dutch pirates, the city was moved to where it is, a much more strategically safe place. Prefering the dry, highlands of other parts of Honduras, San Pedro Sula did not get many new settlers. However, over time, San Pedro Sula snowballed into a very well populated place, and was officially recognized by the Congress of Honduras as a city.\


Tourism

Being close to other major cities in Honduras, and having wonderful hotels, San Pedro Sula can serve as a place to stay, even when your travels don't center in the city itself.
