Return to History 8 Archaeology Bone From a Dry Sea

Summary

The chapter begins right after Vinny had found the toe bone of a 5 million year old creature. Dr. Haminska and Vinny's dad are arguing over this bone, because there might be a whole skeleton as well. Vinny begins to talk to May Anna, and May Anna begins to explain to her that, even thought Dr. Haminska drives everyone crazy, he also is needed so everything else can operate. Soon after this conversation, Vinny's dad and Dr. Haminska stop arguing and make peace. Vinny's dad walks over and tells her that Dr. Haminska wants the results by Thursday, so he and Fred (his assistant) will have to be out at the site by sunrise, which means Vinny will not be seeing much of him. Vinny then asks if she can come with him, and also if they can campout at the site. When he finally says yes to both, they begin to collected everything they will need for their "fly camp."

Physical place

Physical Place is a sub-category of one of the five themes of geography, Place. Physical Place consists of the landforms, climate, bodies of water, soils, natural vegetation, and animal life of a particular place. An example in Bone From A Dry Sea is throughout the whole chapter they talk about the heat, or climate of the place. The heat is what causes them to have to work around sunrise, and then this makes them set up a fly camp at the site. One more example is the entire first paragraph on page 83. This paragraph mentions the grasslands, and a herd of lions or wild dogs. Vinny continues to imagine in the paragraph the small island/marsh and what creatures lived there. It mentions pigs, crocodiles and small deer, all parts of physical place. http://www.csustan.edu/teachered/facultystaff/betts/handouts/pdfs/five%20themes%20of%20geography.pdf
