Known as the "Gift of the Nile," Egypt placed heavy importance upon their great river, relying on it for food production, travel, and providing basic human needs. The Nile provides water for crops such as dates, grain, wheat, barley, flax, linen, and the reeds used to make papyrus. The yearly floods, rich in silt, rejuvenate the soil and maintain its fertility, allowing a great food surplus. Fish were abundant and served as a good source of meat. Farms existed directly off of the Nile to take advantage of these attributes. The Nile flows south to north, allowing barges to travel downstream towards the Mediterranean. To go back upstream ships simply need to use the wind constantly blowing to the south. Cargo, passenger, funeral, and naval ships were created to traverse the Nile. The Nile was Egypt's main source of drinking water. The Nile was integral to the existence of Egypt as a functioning state.
