The use of grain as a major part of the Natufian diet radically altered their lifestyle. Harvests of grain which remain edible for decades were too plentiful for a group to easily carry with them, leading to the formation of base camps where mortars, too heavy to move long distances, remained. One person, harvesting for three weeks, could feed four individuals for a year, creating a plentiful, virtually inexhaustible supply of food. These factors along with the advantageous climate of the time allowed the previous hunter-gatherers to settle in one area, building permanent shelters and rotating through various areas a short distance away from the base camp in accordance with the seasons, rather than aimlessly wandering.
