Some of the first people to introduce the horse to farmers in Europe ware the Beaker people.  The Beaker people were traders and could afford to keep horses.  Horses are very large animals and it takes a lot of food for them to survive, so in order to have even one horse, you would have had to be wealthy.  The introduction of the horse was largely about status.  Horses were also used as beasts of burden, and could transport goods and humans much faster than people on foot.  Horses contributed even more to the growing gap between the wealthy people, and the common people.
