The Natufians were a group of hunter-gatherers who became the first sedentary humans. The Natufians lived from around 13,000 years ago to 9,800 years ago. Their hunting and gathering lent itself to a nomadic lifestyle, one that required packing light and following the food. For a long time, they lived during an Ice Age that brought a cold, harsh climate with it, but when the glaciers began to melt, the Natufians discovered barley and wheat, two grains that grew in large fields and did not go bad. This steady source of food allowed them to become more sedentary. Being sedentary meant that they needed shelter, so they built huts. It was in these huts they would bury their dead.

They would dig a hole underneath the fireplace to place the body in. Then they put a massive river stone on top of the body, some speculate so that the spirit could not come out and haunt the clan. After the river stone was placed on the body, they would surround the body with grave goods like their toolkit, food, and some of their possessions. Recently, an excavation team found a pair of Natufian bodies buried on Mount Caramel with traces of flowers around them, demonstrating that there was a certain amount of pomp and ceremony to the burial.[http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/07/130701-natufians-flowers-grave-funeral-science-ancient/]
