The Law of Talon is defined as "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth". In short, it is a law of absolute revenge, with the punishment fitting the crime. Hammurabi's code, a stone pillar made of basalt on which 282 laws are defined, uses the Law of Talon as the basis for many of its laws. The Code of Hammurabi contains many laws that show the absolute revenge in the Law of Talon, such as "If a patrician has knocked out the tooth of a man that is his equal, his tooth shall be knocked out". Many other laws in the Code of Hammurabi use the death penalty for their punishment, such as the penalty for thievery. The Law of Talon and the Code of Hammurabi were most present at a time where complete revenge was the way of the law.
