Homo Sapiens, the wise men, are the only species of hominid left on Earth. Although no living person was there and we can not know for certain, there are several different theories and speculations about why the Homo Sapiens survived and the Neanderthals did not.

H. Sapiens, a thin-boned bipedal with a large cranial capacity, is the only species of hominid currently inhabiting. Two sources argue that our survival is attributed to the ability to mentally modify their environment, think in depth, and imagine like no other creature could. For example, other species became extinct due to harsh change in climate and overall inability to adapt; whereas, H. Sapiens utilized their intellectual capacity to survive by migrating, trying new foods, and creating new technology, which enabled them to live more efficiently. Neanderthals became extinct due to the competition of the more fit species, H. Sapiens. This initially small, isolated, African species has spread throughout the globe and formed an immense population that  includes all of "us".
Some historians believe that the H. Sapiens traveled out of Africa and began populating the areas where the Neanderthals were living. Eventually the H. Sapiens, more flexible to the changing climates and smarter, drove the Neanderthals, specialists like the A. Bosei, to extinction.

Other historians believe that when the H. Sapiens moved out of Africa, they traveled in smaller groups, as opposed to the huge migration mentioned in the other theory. H. Sapiens and H. Neanderthalensis, very similar species, were structured so similarly that they could successfully interbreed. Over time, the two groups melded into one and the individual group of Homo Neanderthalensis ceased to exist.
