Nefertiti was the great wife of the infamous Akhenaton. She was his wife from 1353-1336BC and may have ruled with her husband as coregent until his death. Nefertiti's parentage is unknown but her most probable father is Ay, a top adviser who became pharaoh after Tutankhamen's death. When she could have ruled, Egypt was still in a state of cultural upheaval due Akhenaton's institution of the primary worship of Aten, with much lesser regard to any others gods even Amun. On the building projects accomplished by her husband, she is frequently painted as his equal shown leading Aten's worship, driving a chariots, and even attacking enemies. She gave birth to six daughters but no sons, so Akhenaton ended up fathering Tutankhamen with his sister, and Nefertiti's third daughter became Tutankhamen's first wife. Around the twelfth year of Akhenaton's 17 year rule, Nefertiti disappeared. She may have died but she also could have became the pharoah's official coregent, like Hatshepsut, assuming the new male name of Neferneferuaten and later going to become the actual pharoah under the name Smenkhkare. As a pharaoh she would not have to pretend to be a male but only change her name and wear the same religious garments during ceremonies. This theory would explain why there have been so little traces of both of these possible aliases as the Egyptians would want to erase traces of a woman on the throne due to the disturbance it would cause in the delicate balance of Ma'at. In 1913, an bust of Nefertiti was discovered upside down in the rubble of an ancient workshop. This bust is now an international symbol for feminine beauty and power.
