"Mudhif" is the name for the communal reed houses of the Madan people (also known as Marsh Arabs) in southern Iraq and Iran. The reed houses are a center for the Madan people to participate in religious worship, social gathering, and other communal activities. Mudhifs are made up of long reeds bound together with brown adobe plaster. The houses are run by the community's religious Sheik. Columns inside the house are arranged in an odd number, so when guests enter and sit against the reeded seat the Sheik can sit evenly in between with two equally sized parties on either side of the sheik. Southern Iraq is naturally a marshland, and these houses have been native of that area for over 5,000 years.
