The Agrarian Transformation that occurred between 8000 and 5000 BCE marked an important shift in the lifestyle of the average human. It led to permanent settlements, social classes, and the eventual rise of civilizations. This transformation had many causes, such as: the 12000 BCE Ice Age, concentrations of people in certain areas, and an overall larger population.

The last Ice Age played an important role in the Agrarian Transformation. The changed climate pushed many large animals into pastures farther north than before. This left a lack of game for the people in areas like the Fertile Crescent. Prompted by this change, the people in affected areas may have begun to domesticate plants and what animals they could find.

A more sedentary lifestyle may be the result of more people being in certain areas than others. On one hand, populations could have increased in areas due to changes in the local flora and fauna, creating the need for hunting groups to move; on the other hand, populations could have increased in unaffected areas due to higher success rates of hunter-gatherer groups. These concentrated population increases led to an overall increase in population. As the amount of people increased, the need for resources such as food increased with it. People such as the Natufians discovered that harvesting large swaths of grain could support much larger populations and provide a steady supply of food. Over time, the harvest of grains became more and more central to life, which may have led to the cultivation of plants and the Agrarian Transformation.

Climate changes and population increases may have been driving forces behind the Agrarian Transformation.
