After the global climate change that ravaged Mesopotamia, collapsing the great empires, a group of people introduced a unique way of life to Canaan. A sharp, sudden increase of people (from 4,500 to 45,000) indicates that another group of people moved into existing settlements. These people, the Israelites, were not quite newcomers to Canaan. They were displaced Canaanites that were originally part of the lower class or slaves. After the (presumed) famine induced most people to abandon their cities in a bid for survival, the displaced Canaanites that came back created an entirely new culture for themselves. They were called the Israelites. They had an egalitarian society devoid of the grand palaces of the former empires, abandoning the oppressive social systems. Most importantly, they created an entirely new backstory for themselves, such as the stories about how their god led them to the promised land, Canaan. Despite the Bible's testimony, the Israelites were not new to Canaan, and they did not topple the great cities in a massive invasion, the cities fell to inside rebellion and natural disaster. From a group of Canaanite dissenters and slaves, they forged a new culture in Canaan.
