Technology played an important role in the rise of the empires in Mesopotamia.  People used pottery to store their food and water by about 6000 BC.

tin. They used textiles, faience, and glass.  The Mesopotamian people figured out how to use the mud in the area to make mud bricks to build their houses, buildings, and temples. Specialized weaponry began to become abundant within the empire of Mesopotamia.  The most common and influential weapon used was the composite bow and arrow, invented in about 200 BC, but Mesopotamia was advanced in the warfare at the time because they had access to weapons such as maces with stone heads, javelins, wooden axes with metal blades, and daggers.  Straight-bladed swords were actually not used in the Mesopotamian army until about 900 BC.  The soldiers wore mostly ineffective felt helmets that were later replaced by hammered metal helmets.  Armor was created out of leather with hammered metal plates sewn on.  There were many war machines invented during this time, including the battering ram and siege equipment.  In about 701 BC, Sennacherib laid seige on Babylonia and completely destroyed the city using the advanced siege equipment. The greatest invention, however, was writing.  The Sumerians developed Cunieform by about 3000 BC.  Cunieform allowed the people to record economic facts such as figures, bills, accounts, inventions, or even parcels of land.  The role of Cunieform was that it helped keep records and stories that could not previously be recorded.  In the 18th century BC, the Code of Hammurabi was created.  Hammurabi was a ruler that believed in fairness, and Hammurabi wanted his subjects to believe that he was a just ruler, so he created a set of laws.  These were the first written laws that were publicly displayed. These laws were all hypothetical statements that usually offered a severe punishment. These records and laws kept order within the Mesopotamian cities, allowing for total control by government. Technology allowed Mesopotamian empires to rise by allowing it to do things that had not been done before.
