Introduction

The AMD Athlon Processor was the first seventh-generation x86 processor and was the first desktop processor to reach speeds of one gigahertz. AMD constructed this processor with the 64-bit architecture.

Overview

It was released in June of 1999. After the release of the AMD’s K6 line of processors, they proceeded to come pump out their next generation: the K7s. AMD designed them with more decoding capabilities, and then carry out optimal instructions [1] AMD-Athlon-64-X2-Dual-Core-Processor.jpg

Significance

The significance of AMD’s Athlon Processor was it the first desktop processor to reach speeds of 1 GHz, it also pushed other brands of computer manufacturers such as Intel to start releasing more high end processors, which then would eventually lead to a revolution in advancements in computer hardware.
