Return to History 8 Archaeology Bone From a Dry Sea

Summary

This chapter starts off with Vinny having a strange dream about this part of Africa in the past, and how she is leading the people behind her through the treacherous marsh. The dream ends in her losing the way and dooming the people she led. After her nightmare Vinny has breakfast with the whole camp and they all talk about their findings. Jane, Dr. Hamiska's wife, found "a deer femur with what could be butchery marks on it"(152), which leads Dr. Hamiska to beleive that this site was definitely inhabited by hominid beings. His whole goal is to impress the Craig Foundation representative, John Wishart, with findings that could be made by early humans. At lunch Vinny's father is teased and tormented about Vinny's defense of the sea ape theory. This drives a large wedge between her and her father, but she wishes to mend the gap by not doing what Dr.Hamiska wants. Dr. Hamiska wants to make the finds a very big deal by presenting only what the news and people want, by showing "them a group of shells that have been deliberately smashed with a primitive tool, and tell them it was a school girl on a visit."(153) and not that this could all be huge leap to a conclusion that might not lead to anything.
