Summary In the first chapter of A Bone from a Dry Sea, Vinny talks about life back home with her dad over a chicken sandwich and a mars bar. Vinny and her dad are about to set off to an archaeological dig to find early human fossils, and an annoying man, Joe, is the head archaeologist.

History as an Interpretation: BFDS Page 13 "Well, about ten million years ago there were apelike creatures, walking on four legs and so on, and just enough to show that they're probably our ancestors, and then there's a huge gap to about three and a half million years ago when there are creatures something like us, with smaller brains than ours but walking on two legs and with jaws much nearer to ours and so on."
