Step 5:Tests and the Supreme Ordeal. In this stage of the hero's journey, the hero,in the Alchemist's case Santiago, undergoes certain trials and tribulations to test his dedication to his quest. During this time, Santiago was tested when his money was stolen from him by the thief in the new port town. He responds to this test by settling into a dark phase, a time when he has subconsciously given up his quest and decided to go back to being a shepherd. Santiago begins to work at the glassblowers shop, where he saves up enough money to resume his quest, which he eventually does. Further ahead in the story when Santiago meets the alchemist and they journey through the desert, the pair are captured by one of the warring tribes and Santiago is forced to give them his money and turn himself into the wind so that he and the alchemist may walk free with their lives.  This is another example of one of the tests he encounters along his way to fulfilling his personal quest. In the hero's journey for something to be considered a hero's ordeal, the hero must experience an near-death experience where all hope is lost. Santiago experience this when he reaches the pyramids, encounters a scarab beetle, which is an Egyptian symbol, and begins to dig for his treasure. While he is digging, Santiago is discovered by men who steal his money and beat him in an attempt to get them to pay him more, only to be told by one of the men of the quest '''he''' gave up that was related to finding buried treasure. Santiago has faced his supreme ordeal, or his near-death experience, and has almost completed his quest. Step 5 in the Hero's Journey is one of the hardest stages that the hero must face in order to succeed in his personal quest. Because as Santiago says in the ''Alchemist'', "Meanwhile the boy thought about his treasure. In his pursuit of his dream, he was constantly subjected to tests of his persistence and courage. So he could not be hasty, nor impatient. If he pushed forward impulsively, he would fail to see the signs and omens left by God along his path..."
