Umma literally means in arabic "tribe" or "nation". In the Islamic world, the word umma refers to the community of beleivers, or the entire muslim world, not just those living within the dar al-Islam. Only one born as a Muslim was accepted as a member of the Umma, converts were still excluded from the true interior group of Islam. Members of the Umma held a special bond of trust, and were expempted from the jizya, a tax on infidels living within the dar al-Islam.
