Tamerlane was born in 1336 near Samarkand. He gained power by forming alliances and attacking his enemies. By 1370 he had gained control over the Khanate of Chaghatai and established his capital at Samarkand. Tamerlane then began to expand into parts of Persia even destroying the Ottoman army, the Golden Horde, and India. He violently sacked Delhi destroying the city. He then turned to take China, but in 1405 he died while traveling. Tamerlane governed his empire that stretched from Persia to Afghanistan by relying on the existing bureaucracy and demanding tribute.
