Dominicans- An order of beggars known as the Dominican friars, similar to the Franciscans begun by St. Dominic, the Dominicans thought that the church had become too materialistic, so they worked to reform it. They had no personal possessions and instead had to beg for food and other needs from the people they preached to. They were especially active in towns or cities where they preached to newly arrived migrants whose numbers were so great that existing churches and clergy could not serve them well. They fought against heterodox movements and did their best to convince heretics to return to the Roman Catholic church. See also: WHI- Chap20-Obj5
