In about the 9th century CE, the city-state of Chichen Itza in the northern Yucatan tried to resolve the hostilities between the warring Maya cities in the south. Rather than destroy another city’s people and culture after they had been conquered, Chichen Itza sought to absorb them into their society, using the influence of others to strengthen Maya society as a whole. By about the 11th century, the city had organized a loose empire that brought a certain measure of political stability to the Yucatan. In addition to their political influnce, Chichen Itza rivaled Tikal in that of size and also held considerable influence over the Yucatan. Chichen Itza was also prevalently involved in religious aspects and had temples and ceremonial sites nonetheless.
