Cuzco was a modest village until Pachacuti retired there and turned into a powerful capital. The Incas considered Cuzco to be "The navel of the universe". Many important buildings were covered in gold. The Inca empire was highly centralized and all of the empire's administrators lived in Cuzco. Today, Cuzco is an important city in Peru.
