Al-Ghazali - (1050 CE - 1111 CE). Most important of the early Sufis and a Persian theologian. He argued that human reason was too weak to understand the nature of Allah and therefore could not explain the mysteries of the world. Only through devotion and guidance from the Quran could humans appreciate the power of Allah. Al-Ghazali held that philosophy and human reasoning were vain pursuits that would lead to confusion instead of understanding.
