Pilgrims and pilgrimages were a part of popular religion during the High Middle Ages in Europe. Pilgrims were people who went on pilgrimages to see relics and honor the saints they represented. These trips helped the economy, a travel industry arose because of the travel with inns, tour guides, brochures, etc. Pilgrims were often not wealthy and had to save up to go on pilgrimages, illustrating the importance of christianity in the lives of people. Pilgrimages also helped bring Europeans into the larger world.
