Saints were a part of popular religion in Europe during the High Middle Ages. They are people who led such exemplary lives that God holds them in special esteem, so they get privileges in the after life. They can talk to God, intervene on Earth, etc. People would pray to saints to ensure passage to heaven and get through hard times. To become a saint, one must perform at least three miracles. Pilgrims traveled long distances to see relics and honor the saints represented, illustrating the importance of saints in the lives of people. An example of a saint is Virgin Mary.
