Describe the conquests, tactics, and the governing policies of Chinggis Khan Chinggis Khan was born into a noble family in 1167 with the name Temujin. When Temujin was ten his father was murdered and he vowed vengeance for his death. In the late twelfth century, Temujin made his first alliance with a Mongol clan leader to strengthen his position. From there he mastered the art of steppe diplomacy. This was how all of the leaders in the Mongol Empire rose to power. Temujin would march into battle himself, and take on the hordes of attackers to show his military power. He combined that with creating very strong allies, but was always ready to turn on his allies and take them over if it would improve his position. Temujin slowly build up his power by making these alliances and breaking them until he had brought all of the mongol tribes into a single confederation in 1206. His name from that point on changed to Chinggis Khan, or "Universal Ruler," and his land stretched from China all the way to Anatolia. His policies were quite unusual, however. He broke up all military tribes and forced them to join new ones, for he did not want a tribe to spark a revolt. He also chose all of his military and political officials on the basis of their talents and their loyalty to him, instead of just because of family ties. In battle Chinggis Khan would surprise the enemy by flanking it and destroy them on all sides. He also had an interesting tactic of attacking but quickly retreating, acting like he had lost, and when the opposing army followed he re-attacked with even more units, crushing his enemy.
