Christian Sacraments- As a part of popular religion, every good Christian was required to observe the sacraments, holy rituals that brought blessings to their observers. There were seven total: Baptism, matrimony, penance, Eucharist, confirmation, Holy orders and Extreme Unction. The church controlled who received the sacraments, and, consequently, who was allowed to go to heaven. The church also held power over excommunication and interdict, so it maintained power over the citizens. The sacraments are only one aspect of Christianity at this time; others include the veneration of saints and pilgrimages to visit the saints' relics. See also: WHI- Chap20-Obj5
